Why boards are the valuable fraction

In most loads the highest value per kilo is not the chassis or the plastic - it is the printed circuit board. Contacts, edge connectors, pins and plated traces carry small quantities of gold, silver and palladium, recoverable in bulk through refining. That is why a box of boards and cards is worth more than its weight in steel suggests.

Boards from data-bearing devices

A drive needs its storage dealt with before it is recycled - see data destruction. A board without storage does not carry the same risk, but if the device held credentials or encryption keys, mention it when booking.

Mixed loads are normal

Component scrap usually arrives with complete machines. The same pickup covers desktop computers, laptops, servers and cables.

What makes a board valuable

The value of board scrap is in the metal that is not visible: gold in edge connectors and plating, silver and palladium in contacts and soldered joints, copper in traces. These are recoverable at scale through refining but not in any practical way by hand, which is why boards should go to a processor rather than be picked over.

Grades that matter

Not all boards are equal. Server and telecommunications boards with high connector density generally carry more recoverable metal than a simple appliance controller. Memory modules and processors sit at the higher end; power supplies and peripherals at the lower. A mixed box is normal and is assessed as a whole.

Do not try to recover the gold yourself

Acid and heat-based extraction in a home setting is dangerous and creates toxic waste that often ends up in a drain. It also destroys the recovery value of everything else in the board. Bring boards intact.

Boards with storage attached

An SSD or hard drive is a storage device, not a board, and is handled separately under data destruction. A board that only held no storage carries far less risk.
