UPS and Battery Disposal in Pune: Why They Cannot Go in the Bin
Lead-acid, lithium-ion and dry-cell batteries need a separate route. What we take, how to make it safe in the meantime, and what happens to the cells.
Why batteries are a separate category
Everything else on this site can wait in a cupboard for a few weeks. A battery is the one item where waiting is genuinely a problem. Lithium cells in phones, laptops and power banks can go into thermal runaway if they are punctured, crushed or overheated — a risk that materialises precisely when batteries are mixed loose into a waste collection. Lead-acid UPS and inverter batteries are heavy, contain sulphuric acid, and leach lead if they end up in an informal dump.
That is the whole reason e-waste has a separate collection stream. See e-waste recycling in Pune for the wider process.
What we take
- UPS units — complete tower or rack units, working or dead
- Inverter batteries — the lead-acid blocks behind a home backup
- Laptop and phone batteries — including swollen cells
- Power banks and battery packs
- UPS housings and electronics after the cell is removed
Making it safe before collection
- Tape the terminals of loose batteries — a strip of electrical or packing tape across both contacts prevents a short against another battery or a metal casing.
- Do not stack loose lithium cells together loose in a bag.
- Isolate anything swollen, warm, hissing or smelling sweet. Do not charge it and do not press it to test it.
- Keep them dry and out of direct sun.
Say at booking time if you have a swollen cell so it is handled as its own item rather than tipped into the general load.
Where they go
Lead-acid blocks are sent for lead recovery through a proper recycling route rather than being broken open. Lithium cells are discharged, sorted and processed for their recoverable metals. Both keep heavy metals and electrolyte out of landfill.
Other equipment in the same pickup
A dead UPS almost always arrives with other gear. The same collection can take laptops, desktop computers, cables and wires and PC components.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put a battery in household waste?
No. Batteries are a hazardous fraction. Lithium cells can ignite when crushed or punctured in a collection vehicle, and lead-acid and nickel-cadmium cells leach heavy metals. They must go to a proper recycling route.
What should I do with a swollen battery?
Stop using and stop charging it. Keep it away from heat and anything flammable, do not puncture or bend it, and mention it when you call so it is collected separately from the general load.
Do you take UPS units with the batteries still inside?
Yes, complete UPS units are accepted. If the battery has been removed, the housing and electronics are still collected as equipment.
Do you take car and inverter batteries?
Inverter and UPS batteries are the focus here. For larger vehicle batteries, call and ask before booking so we can confirm.
